50 Shades of Gay

9401106.t

Following the release of Fifty Shades of Gray there has been much conversation about BDSM. People are curious about what it means; some are tantalized by the practice while others are repelled. Within the gay community the topic of BDSM has been a pretty well known one for quite a long time. Beginning after WWII many gays and lesbians began forming fraternal societies called leather clubs. Today’s BDSM “scene” evolved from this gay leather culture. Many different people practice some form of this lifestyle from living it 24/7 to varied bedroom games. In the US, the title BDSM covers many types of interaction and dates back the 1960’s.

When couples who practice some form of BDSM come to counseling, many can feel that they should not talk about that part of their relationship. They may be worried about what the therapist will think of them. Our therapists are knowledgeable and open to learning about couples and their lifestyles. We strive to give our clients a safe place to discuss all sorts of issues.

The types of things that a therapist would be concerned about are safety and consent. These two things are very important when considering adding some sort of BDSM play into a relationship. If you are considering engaging in some sort of BDSM play it is important to keep in mind the consent and safety of you and your partner. There are some informational and social clubs that stress these topics to their members. At HRT, your counselor can also discuss these topics with you and your partner to encourage a safe and enjoyable experience. Remember; keep it sane, safe and consensual!
