“When it’s over, I want to say all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.”
-Mary Oliver, When Death Comes
Some of you, for the past month, have been observing the Lenten season. All of earth holds its breath, watching and waiting. This is a solemn time of reflection, introspection, and growth.
I like to approach this time with two questions:
- What will you give up?
- What will you embrace?
Through the lens of your relationship – is it time for you to let go of something? A destructive habit? Criticism or contempt? Anger? Complacency? Blame? Take a moment to examine your heart and identify an area that you’re willing to release.
And what will you embrace in your relationship? Like poet Mary Oliver, maybe you will engage an element of amazement in the way you view your partner. Will you adopt an attitude of respect? Gentle care? Kind words? Or maybe give the gift of your time and attention?
As we approach Easter, the practices we have taken up during Lent will become the rhythms by which we live our lives. Keep hope in your hearts as you deepen your relationships during this season.
