Why Happily Married People Can’t Stop Watching DivorceTok
You’d think that if your relationship is stable and fulfilling, you wouldn’t have much interest in content about breakups or divorce. But the reality is—millions of happily married people (myself included) can’t stop watching “DivorceTok” and breakup videos on TikTok, Instagram reels, and other platforms.
I recently shared my expert perspective in a feature for Scary Mommy about why this phenomenon is so magnetic. You can read the full article here: Why Happily Married People Love DivorceTok.
Why It’s So Addictive
Breakup content draws us in for some of the same reasons true crime and reality TV do. It’s high drama without any real consequences for us personally. Our brains are wired to pay close attention to stories about loss or betrayal, and social media algorithms know exactly how to keep us hooked.
The Psychological Pull
Watching other people’s relationship struggles can make us feel grateful for our own healthy partnerships. It can also validate some of our private worries about what could go wrong. And yes—sometimes there’s a little bit of voyeurism and even schadenfreude involved.
The Potential Impact
Like anything we binge, there can be downsides. Too much divorce content can skew our perception of what’s “normal” in long-term love and may even make us more critical of our partners. But in moderation, it can actually spark meaningful conversations about how to protect and strengthen our own relationships.
If you find yourself scrolling DivorceTok late at night, know that you’re not alone—and that even happily married people can learn a thing or two by watching what not to do.
