Currently more women are speaking up about Postpartum Depression (PPD) and, though statistics are low due to many women not seeking treatment, PPD may be more common than we believe.
I recently had a client who was pregnant and feared she would have PPD since she has had symptoms of depression during the pregnancy. There was no assurance she would not continue to have similar symptoms after the pregnancy since factors such as hormonal, emotional, environmental, and social among other factors can come into play.
The following are signs of PPD:
- Sadness, hopelessness
- Crying spells
- Loss of interest or pleasure
- Change in weight or appetite causing noticeable weight gain or weight loss
- Sleeplessness or oversleeping
- Avoiding friends and family
- Loss of energy or fatigue
- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- Impaired concentration or indecisiveness
- Being uninterested in your baby, or unable to care for them
- Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby.
Symptoms of PPD are not to be taken lightly and women experiencing this should not feel ashamed to seek help. At Texas Relationship Therapy, we can provide the guidance and support you need to feel hopeful and look forward to a better day again.
My client was able to gain confidence and awareness to confront symptoms of depression if they were to arise and we can do the same for you!
